Graduation Project: Graphic Design (Part II)

CoraLantis

Question here: When everyone is caring about the forest of the land, who care about the forest of the sea?

  • Reef Check was established in the USA in 1996 to raise awareness on the importance of, and threats to, coral reefs.

  • The local chapter, Reef Check Malaysia (RCM), was registered as a non-profit organization in 2007 to engage with the local community as well as protect, restore and revive coral reefs in Malaysia.

This is the topic of the ACA competition 2017, when everyone discusses water pollution, protect shark or whale or other aquatic species, what I think is we need to go back to the basic, protect the important stage but also a basic stage of the sea. Even though the Reef Check Malaysia has organized so many activities to raise the awareness of protecting the coral reef, but there has no any effect or influence and the message can't really deliver to the audience.

HOLIDAY MOOD

Still, Need to Do Assignment

Click on the image and click "Show More" under the gallery to see more explanation.

During the holiday, I have done some basic research, like searching the fact of coral reef, the outer and inner structure of coral, their lifestyle in the sea and etc.

Besides that, I even went to the coral farm in Petaling Jaya, called "Malaya Reef Aquatic" and the pet shop in Midvalley Shopping Mall to do my 5 senses research.

Watch Now

Observing the movement of the coral, their types, their sizes, colours and the other aquatic species, which are surrounding them. Through this field trip research, the feelings of watching the coral from the video and face to face are definitely different. Observing the movement of the coral and listening to the sound of the water really can refresh my mind and make me felt peacefully even though the envinronmet is noisy.

Trends that Impact Graphic Design

Current Issue in Graphic Design

I'm using vibrant colour as my exercise's topic because it is quite matched with my project 2. Since the graphic of our computer and mobile phone is getting better, vibrant colours definitely had been taken into the website and mobile app design.

Novoseltseva (2016) said that vibrant colours have higher conversation rates and they can also create a powerful and memorable design. For example, the Apple Company.

They introduced colour into their market where colour had not been seen before. They launched colourful iMacs and that brought the brand back to life brand that had suffered $1.8 billion of losses in two years. And now we have the colourful iPods.

Color is not just an artistic choice, but also an important business decision, affecting everything from consumers’ perceptions about a brand to product sales.

Besides that, I have tried two different design with vibrant colours. One is the colourless coral surrounded by the vibrant colours and another one is adding a few vibrant colours on a plain background.

Installation: Intended Outcome

For the installation's intended outcome, I have brainstormed a few concept ideas, the focus point is "Corals are animals, they should have an equal chance  to  survive like  the  other animals" :

  • Jellyfish plastic sculpture.

  • Another Sculpture: Build a layering atmosphere with the transparent acrylic and create the coral with the cutout fishes on it.

  • Interactive: Thermochromic Printing, to show how human influence coral with their own hands. (either appear or disappear).

Water Experiment Automata. by Dean O' Callaghan

Final Decision: Water Experiment AUtomata (by Dean O' Callaghan)

Rethinking: why a lot of people are misunderstanding that corals are plants, I think is because they cannot move and they cannot make sound and of course their appearance doesn't look like animal.

Hence, I decided to make the water experiment automata as my installation outcome, because it showing the movement of the water wave and how this movement makes corals move.

Perhaps adding some coral characters on it, make it as their stage (reef), this will show how human makes the corals move.

Video below shows how the automata works

Illustration Tryout

Started to design the coral characters and the other aquatic species in the sea.

At the beginning, I'm trying to apply the vibrant colours in the illustrations to show their characteristis, like their colourful appearance and they need some "louder colours" to deliver some louder message. However, the outcome is not very "coral" after it done.

Therefore, I decided to change the illstration style to watercolour, which is much more better and suitable, becausethe texture and the flows of the watercolour can really show the vitality of the coral.

"It's time to start your magic journey now!", a sentence which printed on the back cover of the book. So here I'm thinking about what kind of MAGIC?

MAybe it is helping people to relieve their stress through colouring. SO it has the same function as corals.

Put some colours to the dying crals, make them alive!

Main Character Design

For the character design, I decided to use the shape of the coral polyp as the character's appearance, the coral polyp is the basic and main structure that gives the coral reefs their shape.

Besides that, I'm also using the relax expression of the tourists as the facial expression of the characters.

From the design of the poster, the biggest changing is not the visual part, but is the copy-writing. The elements that are changed in the design are:

  1. The typeface of "Welcome to the...", which I try to make it more suitable with the typeface of "Coralantis".

  2. Tagline in the first and main poster: add in "Do you know" as an story extension of the  other posters.

  3. The adjective of the four characters in the poster

  4. The contact information of the agency.
