Project Proposal

Due to globalization, there is plenty of notable foreign brands in Malaysia and as a result it is important for local brands have to adapt their design approach to the new competition. By modernizing their design approach while retaining their cultural style, the local brand can now offer something unique and new to the market, thus allowing it to stand out amongst the competitors.

Research & Case Study

Through the consultation with my lecturer, Ms. Tong Ying. I need to find out the image of the owner and the uniqueness of the brand, like which part of the uniqueness I need to emphasize more to my target audience.

What is the main selling point for rebranding?

- Haircut delivery & Cheaper Price

Target Audience:

- Adult. Especially for those who are outstation and have children or old people in their family. Some of the adults will come back to their hometown and visit their parents and kids when they are free. Through their nostalgia and their great longing for the hometown, they might prefer this type of Chinese salon more than the modern salon.

* Visual Reference

The designers of both of these projects inspired me a lot that how there love their work and their cultures, I really like how they balance the old school and modern style in the design.

* The Salon: Shin Yean Keng

These are the photos that I took in Sin Yean Keng (新燕京)during the weekend that I went back to my hometown.

I found out that the signage board is not the significant thing of the salon, it is the red coloured motorbike of the owner.

Why the owner never upgrade the equipment?

  • Customer's nostalgia (especially old people and the mid-aged group)

  • To recall an treasure (the owner doesn't want the equipment obsolete.)

Through the survey with residents in Beruas, I found out...

  • Aged between 15-25 yrs olds, price and facilities are their priority.

  • 26-44 yrs old: Ambience

  • 45 yrs old and above: Speed + Price. They used to visit this salon and they really don't care how the appearance of the salon looks like.

  • Most of the kids (primary school) like this salon because there have a lot of comic books in this salon. (Got this info from their parents)

* Sketches & Design

These are the survey results that I organised.

These are the basic information, the respondent's group include the young generation until old people, their gender, education level and occupation.

The unexpected thing that I found out from this survey is the respondents between 15-20 years old because they really don’t mind the interior design of the salon, and of course most of the respondents really care the price and the service, but for the people that above 44 years old they just want the salon has a good location where is facilitate them to visit this place.

What I found from this survey is the inner part of the skill the experience really can build the loyalty of the customers, but with the outer part of the visual, the brand design will help it to attract new customers. “Selling memories” can be the main elements for this project.

I have also analyzed the other barbers and salons, like what strategies they use and how they set their brand image to attract their target audience.

June

In this week, I'm facing the dilemma in the design of the booklet, such as the balncing of the vintage and modernity style, the content and its layout. I have also try different effects of the photo that I taken.

After go through with all of these, I found out that the function of the booklet in this project is quite useless because there are not so much content for me to produce a booklet and it is so unenvironmental friendly.

The Pamphlet

Recommended by my lecturer, Mr.Sean. This Pamphlet inspired me to make a poschure (Poster + Brochure) in double sided, which is more informative and environmental friendly. The customers can stick it on the wall as a poster and also become an advertising method.

The images below show the pamphlet that I done. In the brochure side, I separate it into 8 part, fill in with different contents. For the poster, I'll print it in horizontal.

Designing & Producing Week

I'm gonna to produce the rest of the promotion items by this week, such as the stickers, price list board and the advertising plate for motorbike. Meanwhile, touch up the overall design of the promotion items.

The Sticker

The stickers will be stuck on the hair products. Therefore, the customers can dial to the owner and check out for the product they want.

For the design part, I'm still trying to balance the vintage and modernity style, but I failed. Hence, I go to search some examples of chinese vintage sticker in Website, refer to the elements they usually use and the layout.

The Final.

The Price List & Advertising Plate

After referencing for a lot of examples, I knew how's the design trend goes.

Price List

Through the conversation with the owner, I have listed down the price of the services in this salon, the price list will be displayed beside the door of the salon, which enables the customers to consider their budget. Using the peach colour tone to make it stands out from the wall of the salon.

Advertising Plate

Using the dark turquoise colour as the main colour of the design to make a contrast with the red coloured motorbike. For the content, I tried to reduce the information. Therefore, the riders can straight away get the point from a certain distance. Besides that, imagine that the owner parked her motorbike in front of the customer's house (door-t-door service), the colours will attract the residents in this housing area comes and see what is written on the plate. Hence, it becomes another advertising strategy.

Touch-up!

The Signage Board

Redo the signage board after I have done the advertising plate, which is more nostalgia and suitable for the people who are illiteracy.

The Previous Design

Besides that, I have also create a Instagram Account for Sin Yean Keng Salon, which is easier to update the status / upload the new photos. Based on the budget issue, using the #hastag, which is easier to let people find out this account.
